Independent is preparing a busy Cannes slate, announcing two initial titles including a documentary about the acting legend and multi-award winning actor Ian McKellen. McKELLEN: PLAYING THE PART, is directed by Joe Stephenson (Chicken), with music from Peter Gabriel, and will be a unique journey through the key landmarks of McKellen’s life, from early childhood into a demanding career that has placed him in the public eye for the best part of his lifetime. Other cast in the film include Luke Evans, Frances Barber, Adam Brown, Scott Chambers, Milo Parker and Edward Petherbridge. Producers include Stephenson, Mark Birmingham (Hitman’s Bodyguard, Killing Jesus), Lene Bausager (Flashbacks of a Fool, Cashback) and Sophia Gibber (Sleep). The film is financed by Great Point Media, with Lipsync Post Productions. McKELLEN: PLAYING THE PART is currently in post production.

Also in post production is MY PURE LAND, a directorial debut from Sarmad Masud, produced by Bill Kenwright (Broken, Cheri, The Purifiers). Based on a true story, a young woman called Nazo and her mother and sister are called to defend their home after a bitter family feud leads to her father’s incarceration. Cast includes Suhaee Abro, Eman Malik, Syed Tanveer-Hussain and Razia Malik. First footage will be screened in Cannes.

Titles that will receive a Market Premiere include Rupert Jones’s KALEIDOSCOPE and Thomas Napper’s JAWBONE.

INDEPENDENT MD Andrew Orr says: ‘’This is the first of several exciting announcements for us in Cannes this year.  We’re excited about the insight these films offer into two very different worlds - from an intimate look at the life of one of the world’s greatest actors, taking him from the West End Stage to Hollywood, to a Malala like story of a young woman’s extraordinary courage in the face of convention.”
